Kentucky State University, men’s and women’s track and field, traveled south to compete in the Austin Peay Governors Invitational over the weekend.
Junior Kaitlyn Bright made headway as she recorded two top 15 finishes on Saturday. In the 100-meter hurdles, Bright finished tenth with a time of 15.77, just a few notches shy of her personal best. But it was a performance in the 100-meter dash that awarded her with a new personal best. A week ago in the Centre Invitational, she ran a 13.05, at APSU she finished at 12.81 for 12th place.
Along with Bright, senior Alijah Carpenter picked up a new season best in the 100-meter dash. The Cincinnati, Ohio native received a time of 12.53 for a 10th place finish. Her time now places her 11th in the SIAC for the event.
Junior Vinsetta Covington continued her stretch of continual improvement in the shot putt as she narrowly surpassed her previous personal best of 12.61 to 12.62. Her new distance ranks her fourth in the SIAC standings.
Freshman Chelsey-Marie Ford placed third in the discuss throw at 35.46 on her first throw of the day, giving her a new personal-best. The distance also placed her sixth overall in the conference standings.
On the men’s side, junior Aymir Taylor clinched a top 10 finish in the 100-meter dash with a new personal best of 10.92 for eighth place, pushing him to eighth overall in the SIAC. Taylor also moved into ninth overall within the conference in the 200-meter dash with a time of 22.07 for a 10th place finish at APSU.
Earlier in the season, junior Dante Johnson notched a time of 53.82 in the 400-meter hurdles, positioning him as the top runner in the SIAC. Johnson did not eclipse his previous time but finished third in the event at 54.04.
Senior Julius Barton and sophomore Toussiant Shaak Rose continue to improve every week in the high jump as they now sit at fourth and fifth in the conference rankings. A week ago at WKU Barton accomplished his best jump of the season at 1.91 meters, this week Rose clinched his personal best of 1.88 meters.
