Louisville men’s tennis splits a pair of matches to wrap up the regular season

he University of Louisville men’s tennis team defeated IUPUI 7-0 in its regular season finale Sunday evening at the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center. Prior to that, the Cardinals opened the Sunday doubleheader with a 6-1 loss to No. 12 North Carolina. Louisville finishes the regular season with a 20-8 overall record and a 6-6 mark in ACC play.

Louisville 7 – IUPUI 0
The University of Louisville 39th-ranked men’s tennis team did not lose a set on their way to a sweep of IUPUI on Sunday night at the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center. The Cardinals wrap up the regular season with a 20-7 overall record.

“We’re very happy with the win, I thought the guys really responded well,” said UofL head coach Rex Ecarma. “We were a little bit down after that North Carolina match, I felt like we didn’t play our best tennis… So to have tonight’s match, to play again… it was good to get back out there and play. The guys responded with a really good doubles point and six good singles wins. It was good for us to get this win and feel confident going into the ACC tournament.”

The duo of George Hedley and Christopher Morin-Kougoucheff defeated Jose Calero and Mikel Saavedra 6-1 on No. 3 to start the doubles action. At the two-spot, Ciro Lampasas and Nicolas Rouanet clinched the doubles point after defeating Bradley Luetschwager and David Beasley 6-4. The 47th-ranked doubles duo of Sean Donohue and Parker Wynn defeated Kyle Whittaker and Jac Newis 7-6 (7-4) to sweep doubles play.

The singles action was started with a Clement Filho 6-1, 6-0 victory over Mikel Saavedra at No. 5. Ciro Lampasas followed with a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Grant Weaver at the six-spot. On No. 4, Brandon Lancaster defeated Bradley Luetschwager 6-2, 6-2 to clinch the match. Parker Wynn defeated Jac Newis 6-2, 6-4 at No. 1. George Hedley was victorious at No. 3 defeating David Beasley 6-3, 6-2. Nicolas Rouanet clinched the 7-0 win at the two-spot with a 6-0, 6-2 win over Jose Calero.

The Cardinals will now prepare for the ACC Championship in Rome, Ga., which starts on Wednesday, April 26.

The University of Louisville men’s tennis team fell to No. 12 North Carolina 6-1 Sunday afternoon at the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center. The Cardinals (19-8) will return to action against IUPUI Sunday evening at 5 p.m.

“North Carolina came very prepared,” said head coach Rex Ecarma. “I have so much respect for their coaching staff. They’re some of the best in the business. Their team came very, very prepared, very solid. They did not give us anything to work with.”

North Carolina jumped out to an early lead in doubles with the duo of Robert Kelly and Josh Peck defeating Christopher Morin-Kougoucheff and Ciro Lampasas on court 2. Jack Murray and Simon Soendergaard clinched the doubles point for the Tar Heels with a 6-1 victory over Sean Donohue and Parker Wynn on court one. George Hedley and Nicolas Rouanet were trailing 4-2 to North Carolina’s Anu Kodali and Ronnie Schneider when their match was stopped.

Murray gave North Carolina a 2-0 lead with a 6-0, 6-2 win over Hedley on court four. Soendergaard defeated Rouanet 6-0, 6-2 on court 3 to stretch the Tar Heel’s lead to 3-0. Kodali clinched the win for North Carolina with a 6-2, 6-2 over Clement Filho on court six. Blaine Boyden added to the lead with a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Brandon Lancaster on court 4. Schneider capped off the match by beating Kougoucheff 6-2, 4-6 (9-3) on court one.

Wynn gave the Cardinals their only point by winning 2-6, 6-3 (9-3) against North Carolina’s Soendergaard on court two.
