Thomas Peter and Bryson Smith posted multi-hit performances, but WKU Baseball lost to UTSA in the series finale by a score of 7-1. For Smith, it was his first career two-hit game, while Peter took the team lead with his 12th this year.
The Roadrunners (16-15, 6-6) took a 3-0 lead in the first when Bryan Arias hit a two-run homerun off Hilltoppers’ starter Evan Acosta, with Chris Estrada adding an RBI double later in the inning. Kevin Elder relieved the lefty with two outs in the first and ended up with five innings pitched on the afternoon with two strikeouts and three runs allowed.
WKU (11-22, 4-8) got on the board in the third, when Colie Currie doubled to right field with two outs and was brought home by a Peter chopper up the middle to make the score 4-1. Currie extended his on-base streak to a team-best 12 games with the two-bagger and scored his 21st run of the year.
But UTSA added a run in each of the fifth, sixth and seventh frames to get to the final of 7-1 on Sunday.
Jackson Sowell capped the afternoon with 1.2 perfect innings out of the bullpen, retiring 4-of-5 Roadrunners on strikeouts. Nathan Methvin entered the game as a pinch hitter in the sixth and went 2-for-2 with a pair of singles to left field.
