The top-seeded Thomas More College softball team went 2-0 today (Saturday, May 6, 2017) on the first day of the Presidents’ Athletic Conference (PAC) Championship Tournament and advance to the championship game of the tournament. The Saints defeated fourth-seeded Thiel College, 7-2, and second-seeded Westminster College, 1-0.
With the win, the Saints improve to 33-8 and advance to the championship round of the tournament. They will play either Westminster or Thiel at 12 p.m. tomorrow. Those two teams play in an elimination game at 10 a.m.
In the first game of the day, Thomas More scored two in the first, one in the third, one in the fifth and three in the sixth, while holding Thiel to one in the first and one in the fourth for the 7-2 victory. Sophomore pitcher Alix DeDreu (Rising Sun, Ind./Rising Sun) earned the win as she pitched all seven inning and gave up two runs (one earned) on eight hits and struck out six.
Three Saints had multiple hits in the game as sophomore third baseman Whitney Quillen (Dayton, Ky./Highlands) was two-for-two with a run batted-in, DeDreu was two-for-four with two runs scored and a RBI and senior designated player Kayla Fulcher (Mason, Ohio/Cincinnati Christian) was two-for-three with a double and two runs scored.
In the winner’s bracket final, Thomas More played the lone run of the game in the bottom of the sixth when DeDreu scored on a sacrifice fly by sophomore left fielder Mary Beth Odom (Taylor Mill, Ky./Dixie Heights). DeDreu earned the win in the circle as she pitched a complete game shutout giving up four hits, while striking out seven.
Junior center fielder Laura Finke (Fort Wright, Ky./Notre Dame Academy) led the Saints at the plate as she was three-for-three and had two doubles.
