Kentucky junior second baseman Riley Mahan has been named one of 25 semifinalists for the Dick Howser Trophy, it was announced by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association.
This is the 31st year of the Dick Howser Trophy, which is given to the nation’s best player. The finalists will be announced on Friday, June 9 and the award will be presented at TD Ameritrade Stadium in downtown Omaha, the home of the College World Series. The winner will be unveiled on MLB Network on Friday, June 16.
Mahan, who has been named Southeastern Conference Player of the Week three times this season, is batting .349 in 54 games, with 22 doubles, three triples, 14 home runs, 52 runs scored, 56 RBI and eight steals. He is slugging .674 and owns an on base percentage of .403.
In SEC play, Mahan has been even better. He leads the league in runs (33), doubles (12), total bases (98), slugging (.852), triples (3) and home runs (11). He’s second in batting average (.409) and hits (47) and fourth in RBI (31).
