Kentucky senior Aldila Sutjiadi fell in the opening round of the NCAA Women’s Tennis Singles Championship Wednesday morning, dropping a 7-5, 6-3 decision to No. 119 Kana Daniel of Penn.
Despite a tightly-contested first set, the Penn senior took the momentum in the second to seal the upset over Kentucky’s 22nd-ranked senior. With the win, Daniel moves to 20-11 on the season and advances to tomorrow’s Round of 32 to face Baylor’s Blair Shankle.
Sutjiadi closes her singles career at Kentucky with a 71-42 four-year record, including a 19-15 clip in her senior season. With more than 15 career victories over ranked singles opponents, Sutjiadi has played an integral role in UK’s success in recent years.
The Jakarta, Indonesia, native will be back in action on Thursday as she opens up NCAA doubles play with teammate Mami Adachi. The pair holds the No. 3 overall seed and will face Georgia Tech’s Rasheeda McAdoo and Johnnise Renaud. Thursday’s start times have not yet been announced.
