EKU Baseball’s Fisher Drafted by Florida Marlins

Ben Fisher was drafted by the Miami Marlins in the 21st round of the 2017 Major League Baseball Draft on Wednesday. Fisher was the 629th overall pick in the draft.

The Richmond, Kentucky native was the 22nd player chosen by the Marlins in the draft and the first first baseman chosen by Miami. He is the third Colonel drafted in Edwin Thompson’s two seasons as head coach.

Fisher, the Ohio Valley Conference Co-Player of the Year, finished the regular season leading the nation in home runs with 25, and runs with 71. He also finished third with a .762 slugging percentage and 170 total bases. His 72 RBIs were fourth in the nation at the end of the regular season. He also won the Academic All-America of the Year for Division I baseball, and earned multiple athletic All-America honors.

Earlier this year Fisher was named a semifinalist for the Dick Hoswer Trophy, awarded annually to the best player in college baseball, and was also on the Golden Spikes Award watch list. He was included on the Rawlings/Perfect Game Midseason All-America first team in April.

Fisher is the 35th Major League Baseball draft selection in EKU baseball history, joining former teammates Mandy Alvarez and Kyle Nowlin who were drafted in 2016. Eleven former Colonels have played in the Major Leagues, including current San Diego Padres pitcher Christian Friedrich.
