Former Kentucky Wesleyan College pitcher Matt Pobereyko has signed a contract with the New York Mets organization after starting the season with the Florence Freedom of the Independent Frontier League.
Pobereyko was assigned to the Columbia Fireflies, a Class-A affiliate of the Mets. In two appearances last week, Pobereyko tabbed all six outs via strike outs. In 2.0 innings, he allowed one hit and two walks along with the six strikeouts.
The Hammond, Ind. native picked up ten saves with the Freedom this season. In 18 innings, Pobereyko tabbed 38 strike outs while allowing just five walks and eight hits. With a record of 1-1 and an earned run average of 1.00, Pobereyko held batters to a .129 batting average.
In just three seasons at Kentucky Wesleyan, Pobereyko set the single season school record for strikeouts at 104 and is the first and only Panther in program history to strikeout over 100 batters. During his senior season he led the Great Midwest Athletic Conference in ERA (1.84), wins (nine) and opponents’ batting average (.183). Pobereyko earned First-Team All-G- MAC honors as well as two All-Region honors.
