Louisville Baseball’s Hairston Named to ABCA Gold Glove Team

University of Louisville junior shortstop Devin Hairston was named Wednesday to the 2017 American Baseball Coaches Association Gold Glove Team. The announcement marked the second straight season a Cardinals player has earned the prestigious honor after catcher Will Smith became the program’s first Gold Glove winner in 2016.

The ABCA Gold Glove Awards are selected by ABCA coaches committees at each level: NCAA Divisions I, II and III, NAIA, NJCAA Divisions I, II and III, Pacific Association Division, and High School. The Gold Glove winners have been selected since 2007 in the collegiate and high school ranks, featuring many future Major League Baseball players. The ABCA Award Program is one of the most comprehensive in all of sports, awarding All-America Teams and Gold Glove Teams in nine divisions of amateur baseball as well as All-Region Teams in five divisions.

Selected as the ACC Defensive Player of the Year, Hairston has performed at a high level at shortstop this season posting a .987 fielding percentage with just three errors in 236 chances. He has registered 88 putouts to go with 145 assists and has had a hand in turning 26 double plays. The Lexington, Kentucky native, who is a two-time ABCA All-American and All-ACC standout, also has a .310 batting average with three home runs, 52 RBI and 16 doubles while starting all 64 games this season.

The No. 7 national seed Cardinals (53-11) continue their fourth College World Series appearance with an elimination game against No. 6 TCU on Thursday at 7 p.m., CT at TD Ameritrade Park Omaha and on ESPN2.
