Andrew McKelvey’s 62nd-minute penalty kick goal gave the UK men’s soccer team a third win in a row to begin the season, 1-0, at Memphis on Saturday.
McKelvey hit his penalty low and right beyond the Memphis goalkeeper to score his second goal of the season.
The senior forward stepped to the spot after Memphis’s No. 4 Ben Roberts was sent off for bringing down Connor Probert in the box as the last defender.
Kentucky improved its 2017 record to won 3, lost 0, drew 0. The Wildcats will complete a three-match road swing on Tuesday at Louisville.
Memphis dropped to 0-2-1.
Kentucky outshot Memphis 13-7 and put six of its attempts on goal compared with two by Memphis. Memphis looked best in attack in the last 10 minutes, but UK was able to see out the clean sheet.
UK has outscored opponents 4-1 this season, and held two of three opponents scoreless with freshman Enrique Facusse having played every minute of the year in goal.
The quote
“It’s always good to get a road win,” senior midfielder Noah Hutchins said. “Get some momentum going forward. It wasn’t the best, but we played well for stretches in the game so we have some things we can build on going forward.
“It was good to get McKelvey another goal, and get some confidence for our strikers going.”
The history
Kentucky improved to 6-4-4 all-time against Memphis.
The notes
Andrew McKelvey’s second goal of the year drew him level with Stefan Stojkovic for the team lead this season. He has seven career goals, and has now equaled his output from last season. His career high for goals in a season was three in 2015.
