Behind a 20th-minute goal from freshman Eva Mitchell, the Kentucky women’s soccer team shutout the Western Illinois Fighting Leathernecks, 1-0 on Friday afternoon at the Bell Soccer Complex in Lexington.
Kentucky held WIU without a shot, shot on goal or a corner kick in the match. The Wildcats generated 27 shots of their own with eight of them recorded on frame and 10 corner kicks.
The breakthrough came at 19:23 as Katy Keen served in a spectacular ball to the far post off a long-range set and it was powered past WIU keeper Ines Palmiero for the 1-0 lead by Mitchell. For the Freshman native of Nicholasville, it was her second goal of the season. It was Keen’s first assist of the season.
Kentucky will travel to Ohio on Sunday to face the Bobcats in a 2 p.m. ET fixture from Athens, Ohio. Live stats of that match can be found on Ohio’s website. There will be no television or streaming coverage of the match.
As part of UK’s 27 shots, over 10 players had an attempt on goal with five different players getting efforts on frame. The Wildcats were led by England’s Hollie Olding, who registered five shots in the game, including UK’s best scoring chance in the second half on 75 minutes.
Evangeline Soucie had a rather quiet day in net, recording her first clean sheet of the season – but was not forced to make a save in the match.
