Georgetown College men’s basketball led the whole way Tuesday evening to improve to 11-0. However, it was not as easy as the final score, 98-86, might appear.
The No. 4 Tigers had to claw its way past a scrappy, sharp-shooting, disciplined Indiana University Southeast team. The Grenadiers (5-4) are ranked 19th in NAIA Division II and are coming off an 85-80 win over Campbellsville University. They were out to hand a second loss to a Mid-South Conference team.
Jacob Conway hit the first basket and the only tie of the game came on the next possession as IUS’ Lukas Burkman scored. GC went on spurts, but never could put Wiley Brown’s team out of the game.
The second half heated up as tension flared during one of the Grenadiers’ runs. The visitors were charging down seven when the Tigers bench was assessed a technical foul. IUS hit both free throws, but coach Chris Briggs’ team responded with the most fire all night.
Georgetown went on a 20-8 run for a 17 point lead, its largest of the game. IUS never backed down, but the game seemed to be well in hand at that point.
Shadell Millinghaus turned in another brilliant performance with a team-high 22 points, 10 rebounds and five assists in 37-plus minutes. Quan Poindexter had 21 points, including 3-of-5 from deep. Troy Steward came off the bench for 18 points, while Jahyde Gardiner chipped in with 10.
The Tigers are back in action over the holiday weekend, playing host to Miami University – Hamilton (1-5) 2 pm Friday and Central Penn College (4-2) 2 pm Sunday.
