Clairissa Hankinson racked up a career-high seven blocks to lead the Eastern Kentucky University volleyball team in a four-set loss at Morehead State University Tuesday night.
EKU lost by scores of 25-15, 17-25, 26-24 and 25-17.
The squads came out of the break even and the Colonels jumped ahead early, 7-3, after back-to-back blocks from Celina Sanks and Hankinson. EKU continued to lead down the stretch. The Eagles drew within one, 20-19, after a block from Olivia Lohmeier and Maddie Fella. Fella came up with a putaway to tie the set at 20. The teams continued to play point-for-point but another block from Morehead State and an EKU ball handling error pushed the Eagles over the top, 26-24.
Sanks poured in 22 kills to lead all players. The senior has notched 1295 on her career moving her to No. 10 all-time in a Colonel career.
Cassie Knutson contributed 10 kills and led EKU with 27 assists. Chloe Rojas led all players with 16 digs.
In the second set Eastern Kentucky used a 9-1 run to take a seven point advantage over the Eagles, 13-6. Morehead State responded with five unanswered points to draw within one, 14-13. MU only scored four more points the remainder of the set. After a trio of errors from the Eagles the set tilted in favor of the Colonels, 25-17.
EKU will host Murray State in its season finale on Saturday. First serve is scheduled for 5 p.m.
