“We were outrebounded by 10 and gave up too many offensive rebounds, including second-chance points,” said head coach Jamaal Jackson. “We didn’t have nearly the amount of effort that we need to win, and changes will be made to remedy that in our upcoming games.”
The Thorobreds (0-6) are still searching for their first win of the season as they began a six-game homestead with the loss to FVSU. The Wildcats (3-3) are back to the .500 mark after winning three of their last four contest.
KSU showed the ability to fight back, as they began the game on the wrong side of a 20-6 run. The green and gold followed the lead of junior forward Kevin Hayes as he accounted for 16 first-half points, cutting the once 14-point lead to just two, 34-32 with a little over four minutes to play in the half, and later 42-39 going into the half.
FVSU built on its lead to as many as 12, but KSU showed once again its ability to fight back, pulling within four at 65-61 following a made three-point bucket by senior guard Reggie Breeden with 9:01 left in regulation. The Wildcats answered back with a 15-5 run to go up 80-66, to put the upstart Thorobreds in the rear-view mirror for good.
Hayes capped off his day with a team-high 20-points and two highlights dunks, showing his athletic ability to the home crowd. Senior guard Dorian Jordan followed up with 14 points and a team-high eight assists.
KSU will take on Albany State University in the second game of women’s and men’s doubleheader at 7:30 pm ET on Monday.
