The Kentucky men’s tennis team wrapped up play at the ITA National Fall Championships and the Wake Forest Invitational on Sunday.
Will Bushamuka and Ryo Matsumura competed in the ITA Fall National Championships. The Oracle ITA National Fall Championships is the only intercollegiate event to feature competitors from all five divisions competing for a single national championship. Matsumura advanced to the second round of the tournament after beating Ferran Calvo of Oklahoma, 6-4, 7-6 (5). Matsumura fell to top-seeded Nuno Borges of Mississippi State, 7-5, 6-1 in the second round.
Bushamuka was eliminated in the first round of the National Fall Championships by Thomas Laurent of Oregon in a three set match of 5-7, 6-4, 6-0, and was moved to the consolation bracket. Bushamuka earend a 3-6, 7-6 (2), 6-0 win over Jack Molloy of Cal before falling to Giovanni Oradini of Mississippi State, 6-4, 6-3 in the round of 16.
In the Wake Forest Invitational, Cesar Bourgois, Austin Hussey, Jake Stefanik and Enzo Wallart played. In the A1 singles, Cesar Bourgois was defeated by Bar Botzer of Wake Forest, 6-3, 6-1 and moved to the consolation bracket. Bourgois earned a win over Chase Burton of Liberty, 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 and advanced to the semifinals, where the match was not played because he was set to face teammate Hussey. Bourgois was victorious in an extra match of Georgiy Malyshev of NC State, 7-6 (1), 6-4.
Austin Hussey was moved to the consolation bracket after losing to Spencer Furman of Duke, 6-3, 6-2. He earned a win over Shamael Chaudhry of Davidson, 6-0, 6-3. Hussey also earned a victory over Jorge Alfonzo of Tennessee Tech, 6-2, 6-1.
In A2 singles, Jake Stefanik advanced to the finals after earning three wins. He beat Damon Roberts of James Madison, 6-1, 6-4, Igor Savelkic of NC State, 6-3, 6-4 and Alan Gadjuev of Wake Forest, 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 en route to the finals. In the championship match, Stefanik lost to Nick Stachowiak of Duke, 7-6, 6-0.
Enzo Wallart advanced to the semifinals of the A2 singles bracket after defeating Bennett Crane of Indiana, 6-0, 6-3 and Oliver Stuart of Mercer, 6-4, 6-1. Wallart fell to the No. 2 seed Nick Stachowiak of Duke, 6-2, 6-4 and competed in the third place match on Sunday. In the third place match against Alan Gadjiev, he won, 6-3, 6-3.
In A1 doubles, Stefanik/Hussey beat Salas/Gutierrez of Liberty, 6-2 and Salgado/Redding of Indiana, 6-2, to advance to the finals against Botzer/Gadjiev of Wake Forest. In the championship, the Wildcat duo took home the trophy with a 6-3 win.
Bourgois/Wallart fell in A2 doubles to Lanthiez/Mendoza of James Madison, 6-3 and moved to the consolation bracket. They earned a win, 6-3, over Alfonzo/Garcia of Tennessee Tech to advance to the consolation finals. In the consolation finals, they took down Khrapki/Rose of Davisson, 6-1.
