Thomas More Men’s Soccer Falls to No. 1 Calvin in NCAA First Round

The Thomas More College men’s soccer team fell, 4-0, to top-ranked Calvin College tonight (Friday, November 10, 2017) in a first round match of the NCAA Division III Championship Tournament at Don Shula Stadium on the John Carroll University campus in University Heights, Ohio.

With the loss, the Saints end the season at 14-5-2. With the win, the Knights improve to 20-0-1 and advance to play 20th-ranked and host John Carroll tomorrow in a second round match.

Calvin took a 1-0 lead in the 12th minute when Bobby McCaw scored from 10-yards out. Jacob Witte extended the Knights’ lead to 2-0 when he scored in the 48th minute. The Knights increased the lead to 3-0 in the 53rd minute on a Witte goal. Calvin made the score 4-0 in the 79th minute when Micah Beard scored.

Junior goalkeeper Jeff Paulin (Alexandria, Ky./Bishop Brossart) played all 90 minutes in goal and had six saves.

Junior forward Sam Lewis (Stawell, England/Crispin School) led the Saints in shots with four, including one that went off the cross bar in the opening minutes of the match.

Thomas More was making the program’s eighth NCAA Division III Championship appearance and won its seventh Presidents’ Athletic Conference (PAC) regular season title and seventh PAC Championship Tournament this season.
