University of Louisville senior defender Tim Kubel was named Tuesday among 15 semifinalists for the prestigious MAC Hermann Trophy, the most coveted individual honor in NCAA Division I soccer. It marked the second straight season Kubel has been selected as a semifinalist, which are chosen based on voting by NCAA Division I soccer coaches.
The MAC Hermann Trophy has been awarded annually since 1967. Three men’s finalists and three women’s finalists will be named on December 8 in conjunction with the Men’s College Cup semifinals in Philadelphia. The 2017 MAC Hermann Trophy banquet will be held at the Missouri Athletic Club in St. Louis on January 5, 2018 to formally announce this year’s winners.
Kubel has six goals and a team-leading seven assists while starting 18 matches at right back this season for No. 4 Louisville (13-2-4), which clinched its second straight NCAA quarterfinal berth last Sunday. Kubel earned his third straight All-ACC First Team honor earlier this season and is a four-time All-ACC honoree overall.
A native of Stuttgart, Germany Kubel has a trio of game-winning goals in 2017, including the decider at Clemson on Oct. 27. Defensively, Kubel has been pivotal as the Cardinals have registered 11 shutouts this season. In his four collegiate seasons at Louisville, Kubel has 21 career goals and 26 total assists in 81 matches while earning All-American honors in 2016.
