After his clutch shooting lifted WKU Hilltopper Basketball to two victories in the Battle 4 Atlantis, guard Jake Ohmer has been named Conference USA’s Men’s Basketball Freshman of the Week, as announced Monday by the league office.
This is the first weekly award of Ohmer’s career and the first for WKU since Justin Johnson was named Player of the Week on Feb. 6.
Ohmer is WKU’s first Freshman of the Week since Johnson earned the nod on Dec. 15, 2014.
The 6-foot-1, 170-pound guard from Taylor Mill, Ky., was arguably one of the top clutch performers in the country last week, averaging 11 points per game and netting 8 of 11 3-pointers (72.7 percent) during three games in the Battle 4 Atlantis in the Bahamas.
Ohmer’s biggest shot was a game-winning 3-pointer with 4.5 seconds left to give WKU a 63-61 victory over SMU. He also scored 15 points and went 3-for-3 from long range in the Hilltoppers’ 77-73 upset of No. 18 Purdue.
Overall, Ohmer shot 61.1 percent from the field during the week and also grabbed four steals.
Ohmer is averaging 10.7 points per game this season and shooting 47.4 percent from the field, 46.2 percent from 3-point range and 84.2 percent from the free-throw line.
