Campbellsville’s women’s basketball team forced Hiwassee College into 31 turnovers as Campbellsville picked up an 81-44 victory on Saturday afternoon at the Powell Athletic Center.
Campbellsville (11-1) finished with 26 steals, which tied its second most in a game this season after it also recorded 26 steals against Simmons College of Kentucky on Nov. 28. The Lady Tigers opened the season with 33 steals against Blue Mountain College on Nov. 9.
Madison Faulkner led the Campbellsville with 14 points, while Savannah Gregory and Jordan Doram chipped in with 12 points apiece. Gregory finished a with a career-high eight steals, which was one steal shy of the program record. Valerie Cheek led all scorers in the game with 17 points for Hiwassee (8-6).
Lauren Turner scored the first two points of the game with a pair of free throws and Campbellsville never looked back. Hiwassee tied the game on the next possession, but eight-straight points from Campbellsville gave it a 10-2 edge in the first quarter.
Campbellsville used an 11-0 run late in the first quarter to take a 26-10 lead with 1:30 to play in the period. Campbellsville continued to stretch its lead as it held a 30-12 advantage after the first quarter.
The Campbellsville run continued into the second stanza after it sustained a 34-4 run from the 4:09 mark in the first quarter to the 3:14 mark in the second. Over the final 3:14 of the second quarter, Hiwassee was the only team to record a point as it cashed in two more points before the break as Campbellsville held a 49-16 lead at the half.
In the first half, Campbellsville shot 60 percent from the floor, while holding Hiwassee to 25.9 percent.
For most of the third quarter, Campbellsville maintained its 30-point edge with the only time Hiwassee bringing the game within 29 points coming with 4:20 left in the period after a three-pointer from Ashley Roby. Both Hiwassee and Campbellsville put up 14 points in the third quarter.
The two teams played tight in the fourth quarter as Hiwassee cut its deficit to 65-39, which was the closest it came in the final 20 minutes of the game. However, Campbellsville closed the game on a 16-5 spurt to take its largest lead of the contest at the end of the game to earn an 81-44 victory.
Campbellsville capped off the day with a 42-25 rebounding edge over Hiwassee, while Campbellsville made 49.2 percent of its shots and Hiwassee shot at a 29.4 percent clip.
Campbellsville now travels to Honolulu, Hawaii for the Hawaii Classic to face Menlo College on Wednesday at 3 p.m. ET, followed by a 3 p.m. ET contest against Wayland Baptist University on Thursday.
