Eastern Kentucky University punter Keith Wrzuszczak was selected to the prestigious 2017 American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) Football Championship Subdivision Coaches’ All-America First Team, the organization announced on Wednesday.
This is the third organization to recognize Wrzuszczak as an All-American. He was previously chosen to the 2017 STATS FCS All-America Second Team and the 2017 Phil Steele FCS All-America Fourth Team.
Eastern Kentucky holds the record for the longest streak of having at least one player named to the AFCA FCS Coaches’ All-America Team, doing so in 15 straight seasons (1979-93). Wrzuszczak is the first Colonel to be chosen as an AFCA All-American since 2007 when defensive back Derrick Huff was honored by the organization.
EKU has the third-most AFCA All-America selections among all FCS schools, with 27 selections by 25 different players.
Wrzuszczak was one of only three Ohio Valley Conference players to be chosen to the AFCA All-America First Team.
The senior set a pair of program records this season while finishing first in the conference and sixth in the nation with an average of 44.1 yards per punt. He broke the 51-year-old EKU record of 78 yards with an 84-yard punt against Tennessee-Martin. It was the second-longest punt in FCS this season. Wrzuszczak also broke his own program season average record (43.7 yards/punt), which he set in 2015.
In 2017 the Geelong, Victoria, Australia native punted 58 times with only five touchbacks. He placed 19 punts inside the 20 yard line and had 11 punts of 50 or more yards. He helped Eastern lead the conference and finish second in the nation in net punting (41.14 yards/punt).
Wrzuszczak was a preseason All-America pick by STATS and earned STATS Honorable Mention National Special Teams Player of the Week recognition twice.
