Georgetown WBB heads to break with big 75-64 win vs Point Park University

Georgetown College women’s basketball is all about taking steps forward and Saturday’s show down with Point Park University gave a perspective on this goal. The Tigers (5-8) lost by four in Pennsylvania more than a month ago. However, Saturday GC stayed composed in big moments for a huge 75-64 win.

“They made runs, but we didn’t let that rattle us as it has in the past,” said Georgetown’s Kennedy Flynn. “We stayed our course. Handled the pressure and got the job done. In the past we would have folded in moments late in the game and not be able to get back into a rhythm.”
The Irvine, Ky. native led all scorers with 17 points, including 9-of-10 from the foul line. Another steady presence was freshman point guard 14 point (5-of-8 from the field, 3-of-4 from three-point) and five assists.

Two sparks off the bench were Martina Lytle and Shelby Beam. Lytle – a double-double (12 points, 10 rebounds) frustrated the Pioneers (7-6) with five blocks (two more than the entire PPU team combined).

“We played with a little chip on our shoulder,” Lytle said. “They had a post player really dominate the glass there. I knew coming in I’d need to play bigger than I am. I just went for it today.”

Baylee Buleca had 12 points and 22 rebounds (more than half of GC’s total) in the first meeting. Saturday, she finished with eight points and eight rebounds.

Beam provided shots late, slashing through the lane for tear-drop buckets that spoiled Point’s last rally. The redshirt junior scored four of her eight points in the final 3:58 after the Pioneers had pulled within four.

Lydia Graves had some big three-point shots, finishing with 11 points and seven rebounds. Four Tigers finished in double figures this meeting, while it was just two the time before.

“They responded well, worked and played as hard as they could,” said GC coach James Jackson. “It is all about taking steps forward and from Nov. 5 to today, we’ve taken leaps and strides. Now we have to keep pushing forward.”

Georgetown returns to action Dec. 30 hosting Milligan College.

Notes: GC is 5-0 inside Davis-Reid Alumni Gym; the team’s three-game winning streak is the most consecutive wins since five straight in January of 2016 (when this year’s juniors were freshmen).
