Senior guard Dorian Jordan surpassed two career milestones as he joined the 1,000 point club and 500 assists club against Morehouse College as Kentucky State University men’s basketball fell on the road 103-88.
The Thorobreds (3-9, 2-3) have yet to win a game away from the Capitol City, moving to 0-5 on the road. The Maroon Tigers (9-0, 4-0) are off to their best start in more than a decade by winning each of their first nine games, including a 4-0 mark against SIAC opponents.
“We didn’t start the game with the energy and focus that we needed to, and it forced us to play from behind,” said head coach Jamaal Jackson. “Our free throw shooting still must improve drastically, and that hurt us today as well. We play another tough team at their place in Clark Atlanta University on Monday, so we’ll get on the practice floor and move on to the next one.”
MHC led wire-to-wire, holding as much as a 22-point advantage in the second half. KSU showed its ability to mount a comeback after trailing by 20 points in the first half, and slowly chipping away at the lead to a five-point deficit in the second half. The Maroon Tigers offense proved to be too much, shooting 53 percent from the floor, including 62 percent in the second half.
Jordan finished his day with 14 points and 13 assists for his fourth double-double of the season. He now sits at 1,003 career points and 512 career assists.
“They’re both great milestones, and they are a testament to the hard work he puts towards the game and the serious mindset that he approaches the game of basketball day in and day out,” said Jackson. “It’s an honor he can share, as he has played with some good teammates who made those 500 buckets.”
The last Thorobred to reach the 1,000-point milestone was nearly a year ago when fellow Cincinnati, Ohio native Malcolm Smith did the same on Jan. 16 against Miles College, Smith played three seasons with Jordan at KSU.
Junior guard Chas Harvey led the green and gold in scoring for the first time in his career with 17 points on 5-of-10 shooting.
Tipoff between the Thorobreds and Panthers will be at 7:30 pm ET at Epps Gymnasium on Monday night. The game will be the second of a women’s and men’s doubleheader.
