University of Louisville Track and Field Opens Season with Four Wins

The University of Louisville track and field teams wrapped up the first indoor competition with four wins and 11 top three finishes at the Vanderbilt Indoor Opener on Saturday afternoon.

“Today was an exciting finish to our fall training phase,” said head coach Dale Cowper. “We saw outstanding efforts in the field events and on the track throughout the day. I’m excited to see how each squad can progress as we continue to work toward the ACC Championships in February.”

Oliver Newport, Jerin Allen and Javen Reeves all took home wins on the men’s side. Reeves and Allen tied their personal bests with a mark of 2.20m/7’21/2” in the high jump to tie for first. Allen also finished third in the 200 meters with a time of 21.86. Newport won the long jump with a mark of 7.34m/24’1”. Marcus Jegede finished second behind Newport with a jump of 7.30m/23’111/2”.

Devin Valentine tied his personal best mark of 15.09m/49’61/4” to finish second in the triple jump. Carlos Coleman finished third in the men’s 400 meter with a time of 48.03.

Emmonnie Henderson registered a win for the women in the weight throw with a mark of 19.02m/62’5”, to kick off her final season of competition for the Cardinals. Freshman Makenli Forrest finished third in the weight throw with a mark of 18.20m/59’81/2”.

Alexis Gibbons opened up the season with a third place finish in the long jump with a mark of 5.68m/18’73/4”. Morgan Zacharias finished third in the pole vault, clearing 3.95m/12’111/2.

The Cardinals will break from competition over the holiday break before returning at the Kentucky Invitational in Lexington, Ky. on Jan. 12-13.
