Two efficient performances from WKU’s Taveion Hollingsworth earned the guard Conference USA Men’s Basketball Freshman of the Week honors, as announced Monday by the league office.
This is the first weekly award of Hollingsworth’s career and WKU’s second of the season. Guard Jake Ohmer was also named C-USA’s Freshman of the Week on Nov. 27.
The 6-foot-2, 165-pound guard from Lexington, Ky., averaged 15.5 points per game across WKU’s 81-80 loss at Wisconsin and its 81-65 home win over Indiana State.
Hollingsworth shot 10 of 17 (58.8 percent) from the field across both games, made 3 of 5 shots from 3-point range and netted 8 of 11 free throws.
After scoring 12 points in the one-point loss at Wisconsin, Hollingsworth scored a game-high 19 points against Indiana State, including 13 in the second half, for his fifth straight game in double figures – to go along with three steals and two assists. He averaged 31.5 minutes per game.
Hollingsworth, the first freshman team captain in program history, is on pace to finish
among the top players in WKU history for scoring in a season by a varsity freshman with 144 points already. Mike Wilson is 10th on that list with 265 points.
Hollingsworth has started all 11 games this year and is averaging 13.1 points while shooting 51 percent from the field and 55.6 percent from the 3-point line.
