Kentucky State University women’s basketball took down Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference West division foe Tuskegee University, 59-55 on Saturday afternoon at the Exum Center.
The Thorobrettes (5-11, 5-4) have now won back-to-back games for the first time this season, and have won three of their last four games. The Lady Golden Tigers (2-13, 1-6) have lost four consecutive games, marking the second time this season they have dropped four or more games in a row.
“We got off to a good start and put ourselves in a position to win,” said head coach Terrance Slater. “We just have to do a better job of finishing games. I love our fight, and we will build off of that in the coming weeks.”
KSU did not trail at any point in the game, leading by as much as 19 in the second quarter with over six minutes on the clock. TU made it interesting pulling within one in the 4th quarter at 51-50 and eventually tying it up at 51-51. Freshman guard Khaliah Herbert and junior center Chea Taylor each hit big buckets in the final three minutes, along with key free throws by junior guard Lyndsey Downing and senior guard Brittani Rizzi to end the game on an 8-4 Thorobrette run.
Herbert came off the bench to lead the team with a career-high 12 points, shooting 5-of-7 from the floor, and pulling down five rebounds. Joining Herbert from the land of the pine was junior forward Jordan Campbell as she added 11 points and five rebounds. The KSU bench provided stability throughout the afternoon accounting for over 50 percent of the scoring with 30 points.
Junior center Brooke Wallace only managed two points but contributed heavily in other ways. The Oberlin, Ohio native cleaned the glass with a game-high 10 rebounds, marking her fourth game of the year with double-digit boards, and she patrolled the paint as a defensive threat accounting for three blocks.
KSU will look to add to its winning ways with a Monday night affair at the Exum Center against visiting Miles College at 5:30 pm ET.
