Kentucky junior shortstop Katie Reed was named to the 2018 Southeastern Conference Preseason Team, it was announced on Wednesday morning. The honor is voted upon by the 13 head coaches in the SEC.
Reed was named the third National Fastpitch Coaches’ Association All-American in program history a season ago, hitting .353 at the plate, and living up to the hype defensively – with the best fielding percentage of all SEC shortstops. The St. Louis, Mo., native made SportsCenter’s “Top 10” on two occasions last year, including during the 2017 NCAA Regionals in the regional final against Illinois.
The 4.0 student was also First Team All-SEC, All-Region by the NFCA and finished second in the SEC with a .380 batting average in conference games this past season.
Reed ended the season on a six-game hitting streak, and recorded a base hit in 44 of Kentucky’s 58 games – the highest amount of anyone on the team. She started the season with three consecutive two-hit games, and had four different three-hit games, with three of them coming in SEC play against Tennessee, Florida and Missouri.
Reed and the Wildcats will open the 2018 season on Saturday, Feb. 10 at New Mexico State in a doubleheader against the Aggies from Las Cruces, N.M.
