For the first time this season freshman forward Erica Jones was named the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Newcomer of the Week by the conference office on Tuesday.
Jones made her mark for the Thorobrettes as she helped them to a 1-1 record with their 69-67 win over Paine College on Saturday. The Thorobrettes (4-11, 4-4 SIAC) have won two of their last three games, as they venture into a three-game stretch against SIAC west division opponents.
In the feat against PC, the South Haven, Mississippi native collected her second double-double of the season with a game-high 17 points and 12 rebounds. The freshman finished the week with 21 points, 19 rebounds, one assist, a block and a steal. Jones currently leads the team in rebounds, rebound average, and steals while following close behind teammate, senior guard Brittani Rizzi, in scoring, scoring average and field goals. The freshman sits atop the conference ranks as she is No. 4 in rebounds (No. 6 – offensive rebounds/No. 8 – defensive rebounds), No. 5 in Blocked Shots, and No. 13 in Field Goal Percentage.
The Thorobrettes return to action this weekend, Saturday, Jan. 13, as they host western division conference opponent, Tuskegee University, beginning at noon.
