Top-ranked Georgetown College scored 11-straight points and outscored No. 15 Campbellsville 13-2 over the last 3:26 of regulation as Georgetown picked up a 97-93 win over Campbellsville on road inside the Powell Athletic Center on Saturday evening.
Adam Stanford recorded a career-high 25 points for Campbellsville (15-2, 0-1 Mid-South Conference) as it saw its 11-game winning streak come to an end. All nine players for Campbellsville that entered the game recorded at least two points with five players hitting double figures.
This marks the second time in the last four seasons Georgetown has ended a Campbellsville winning streak that was at least 11 games after Georgetown snapped Campbellsville’s 15-game winning streak during the 2014-15 season.
Shadell Millinghaus scored a game-high 29 points for Georgetown (16-0, 1-0 MSC) and was the only player with double-digit rebounds grabbing 11 to cap off his double-double. Troy Steward came off the bench and poured in 25 points for Georgetown.
The game was back-and-forth throughout as neither team led by more than nine points which was the largest lead for both teams in the contest. Georgetown led for the majority of the first half as it led for nearly 11-and-a-half minutes, while Campbellsville held the lead for 3:44.
Campbellsville and Georgetown played within a nine-point window through the first 20 minutes of the game. Campbellsville held its largest lead of three points, three different times in the first half with the last occurring with 7:28 after Hagen Tyler knocked down three foul shots to cap off a 6-0 run for Campbellsville.
After Campbellsville regained a 30-27 lead, Steward hit a three-pointer on the next possession and tied the game, which sparked a 9-2 run from Georgetown. Following a three more free throws from Tyler to bring Campbellsville within a point, Georgetown took its largest of the first half at 41-35 with 4:43 left until halftime.
Over the final five minutes of the first half, Campbellsville tied the score three times, but it could not hedge ahead and Georgetown took a 51-48 lead into the break after Millinghaus hit a three-pointer in the waning seconds of the period.
In the first 20 minutes of action, the score was tied nine times and it changed hands nine different occasions.
Georgetown got off to a quick start in the second half and went on 9-2 run over the first 1:29 of the period forcing Campbellsville to call a timeout. After the timeout, Campbellsville cut the deficit to two points with 14:58 left in regulation, but Georgetown continued to hold a narrow advantage.
A pair of free throws from Tyler at the 10:28 mark in the second half tied the score, 73-73, which was the first time the score was level since late in the first half, just before the three from Millinghaus. The first time Campbellsville took the lead in the second half occurred with 9:18 left in the game, after a bucket by Andrew Smith put Campbellsville on top, 77-75. The lead marked Campbellsville’s first lead since 7:28 in the first half.
Campbellsville used a 9-0 spurt to turn its two-point deficit into a seven-point advantage. Campbellsville held the lead for the next seven minutes of the ballgame and led by nine points – its largest lead of the game – two different times.
With Campbellsville holding a 91-84 lead at the 3:26 mark in the second half, Georgetown scored the next 11 points to grab a 95-91 lead with just 19 second remaining. Tim Coleman pulled Campbellsville within a pair just three seconds later, but Millinghaus iced the game with two more free throws – where he finished 13-for-14 from the stripe – as Georgetown escaped with a 97-93 victory to start Mid-South Conference action.
In the last seven meetings, Georgetown has won six games against Campbellsville including the last three played inside the Powell Athletic Center.
Georgetown shot 46.3 percent from the floor and hit 12-of-27 three-pointers, while Campbellsville shot 43.6 percent overall and just 8-for-29 from beyond arc.
Despite Campbellsville holding a 44-38 edge in rebounding, Georgetown corralled four of its nine offensive rebounds in the final five minutes of the game and it converted on the second chance each of the four times to help spark the comeback.
In games that are decided by five points or less this season, Campbellsville falls to 0-2, as its only other loss came in an 85-80 contest at home against Indiana University-Southeast.
Campbellsville returns to action on Thursday, Jan. 11 as it hits the road to face No. 24 University of the Cumberlands for an 8 p.m. ET tipoff from O. Wayne Rollins Center in Williamsburg, Ky.
