The third-ranked Kentucky rifle team will begin the New Year with two top-15 conference opponents as it will face No. 11 Army on Saturday and No. 13 North Carolina State on Sunday inside the Tronsrue Marksmanship Center on the West Point campus. Saturday’s match is scheduled for 9 a.m. ET but the weekend’s events are subject to time change due to inclement weather affecting travel plans in the region.
Fan’s can follow this weekend’s action with live targets.
“We’re always excited to get the spring season started with some great opponents on a good range,” head coach Harry Mullins said. “It would’ve been nice to have a little more time to train, but overall we had a good training camp in preparing for the next half of the season and keeping ourselves on the path to where we want to be heading into the postseason.”
The Wildcats enter the weekend with an overall record of 20-1 and a perfect 9-0 in the Great American Rifle Conference. UK capped the fall portion of the schedule with six top-10 wins in two quad matches when it defeated No. 6 Ohio State, No. 8 Air Force, and No. 10 Nebraska in Colorado Springs, Colorado, back in November. Freshman sensation Henrik Larsen has finished in first place, or tied for first, in every match to date and has yet to drop below the 595 mark in air rifle this season. Larsen leads the nation in both aggregate (1188.86) and smallbore (592.92) averages and ranks third in air rifle average at 596.57.
The Wildcats met both teams at the season-opening Ole Miss Open in October of 2017, firing a 4714 to NC State’s 4645 and Army’s 4624. The Wolfpack are 7-4 on the season and riding a four-match win streak with wins over No. 10 Akron, No. 11 Memphis, and No. 20 The Citadel. Army has lost three of its last four with two coming at the hands of top-ranked West Virginia and No. 2 TCU.
