University of Louisville women’s golf head coach Courtney Trimble on Friday announced that all-conference standout and Kentucky native Lydia Gumm joined the staff as a volunteer assistant coach.
A four-year letterwinner at Florida State, playing from 2013-17, Gumm was a two-time all-Atlantic Coast Conference honoree. The Radcliff, Ky., native played in the finals of two NCAA Championships and finished her career with 12 top-10 finishes and a 73.89 stroke average, which ranks fifth in school history.
“We could not be more excited to have Lydia join our program,” Trimble said. “She is one of the best golfers to ever come out of the state of Kentucky and her recent experience as a successful student-athlete will have an immediate impact on our players. She knows what they are going through and what it takes to be successful in the ACC and on the national level of women’s collegiate golf and will prove to be a valuable asset to our program.”
In her senior season, the three-year captain averaged a career-best 72.89 strokes in leading Florida State to a top-20 finish at the NCAA Championship finals. The 5-foot-8 golfer, Gumm also played in the Seminoles’ lineup at the 2016 NCAA Championship finals and competed in 45 of 47 events during her career.
In addition to her in-season success at Florida State, Gumm experienced similar achievements during the offseason. She captured the 2014 Kentucky Women’s Amateur Championship and then secured 2016 Kentucky Open Championship title, winning that crown in a one-hole playoff.
Prior to her collegiate career, Gumm excelled at the prep level in Kentucky. She was a seven-time all-state honoree and earned the Miss Kentucky Golf Award a state-record five times, including becoming the youngest honoree at 12 in 2006. In 2012, she was named the Kentucky Golf Coaches Association Player of the Year.
Gumm currently holds the state’s high school record for most rounds counted in the 60s and earned attention around the state for qualifying for the state tournament as a third-grader.
A three-time all-ACC Women’s Golf Academic Team selection, Gumm graduated from Florida State with a bachelor’s degree in sport management in May 2017.
