Kentucky will host its annual home centerpiece meet: the Rod McCravy Memorial Meet on Saturday, Feb. 3 inside Nutter Field House.
Admission is free. Parking will be available in the Green Lot adjacent to Nutter Field House and Kroger Field.
Held annually since 1993, the meet honors Kentucky Wildcat Rod McCravy who suffered an untimely death as a freshman at UK.
The meet has become one of the main attractions of the indoor track and field regular season in recent years, and building on the innovation and general field of top-class track and field athletes, this year will be an elite hexagonal scored meet.
The teams entered are Kentucky, Clemson, Kansas, Illinois, Purdue and Virginia Tech.
On the men’s side, Kentucky is ranked No. 12, Virginia Tech is No. 16 and Kansas is No. 23.
On the women’s side, UK is ranked No. 9.
In the interest of spectator friendliness, the meet will feature an even more compressed schedule this year. Field events begin the meet at 10 a.m. ET, with the first running finals going off just before 1 p.m. ET, and the 4×400-meter relays set to wrap up before 5 p.m.
SEC Network+ will broadcast the meet. Kentucky will provide live results.
The meet will be scored through six places on a 10-8-6-4-2-1 basis with 10 points awarded to event winners, and one point going to sixth place. No restrictions will be placed on the number of scores from a team.
Sections in the running events and the order of competition in the field events will be seeded according to entry marks. In the field events, the seeded flight is contested last.
Honoring Rod McCravy
The high level of competition at the meet has turned into a fitting tribute to its namesake: the late Rodriq McCravy.
McCravy, a UK track athlete, died at the age of 19 in 1987 while sleeping in his dorm room. Although only a sophomore, Rod had already become the track team’s leader. His personal charisma and genuine care for others earned him the respect and admiration of all his teammates.
His personal impact on his teammates, friends, and coaches went well beyond athletics. A social work major, Rod is remembered as a dedicated, enthusiastic athlete, a conscientious student, a cherished friend and most important, an outstanding human being.
A graduate of Louisville Trinity High School, Rod was a two-time class AAA state champion in the 300m hurdles. He once held the UK freshman 400m hurdles record (53.35), and was part of a then-school record 4x400m relay team.
The meet is named in his honor to help members of the UK track and field community to remember him as well as provide an ongoing opportunity to speak about Rod and the positive influence he had on everyone who knew him.
