UofL Track and Field Collects Three Wins and Set Three School Records on Saturday

The University of Louisville track and field teams finished day two of the Power Five Invitational with three school records and three wins. The women’s team tallied four top-three performances while the men finished with two.

“We had some outstanding performances today that will set us up very well heading into the championship segment of our season,” said head coach Dale Cowper. “The school records from Joe Delgado in the heptathlon, Dorcas Wasike in the 3,000m and the men’s 4×400 relay of Teague Peck, Josh Hall, Martice Moore, and Carlos Coleman were certainly the biggest highlights.”

Newcomer Joe Delgado led the men’s side with a win in the heptathlon. His score of 5,627 points was good enough for a new school record. He passed teammate Eric Fox’s record of 5,409 points set at the 2017 ACC Indoor Championships. Today’s score ranks him 10th in the nation.

“Joe’s score places him in the top 10 of the NCAA and there are a few things he’ll sharpen up for the ACC Championships later in February,” said Cowper.

Peck, Hall, Moore, and Coleman finished fourth in the men’s 4×400 meter relay with a time of 3:10.46 for another school record.  The team broke the previous record of 3:11.65 set at the 2016 Meyo Invitational.

Rounding out the men’s success was Marcus Jegede with a win in the long jump. The junior had a personal best jump of 7.49m/24’7″.

“We also saw strong performances from many other students including Emmonnie in the shot put and weight throw, Alexis  in the long jump, Marcus in the long jump, and we’re optimistic that Alivia Ash had a breakthrough that she can build upon in the high jump,” said Cowper.

Sophomore Alexis Gibbons led the women’s side with a win in the long jump with a jump of 6.12m/20’1″. Emmonnie Henderson added to the field event success with a second place finish in the shot put with a throw of 16.72m/54’10 1/4″.

Dorcas Wasike rounded out the pack with a second place finish in the women’s 3,000 meter run. The sophomore set a new school record with a time of 9:18.88. She shattered Benadate Cheruiyot’s record of 9:37.32 set at the 2016 ACC Championships.

“Dorcas was outstanding in the 3,000 meters today,” said Cowper.  “She is getting ready to make a significant contribution to out program at the ACC level and beyond.”

Gabriela Leon had another successful meet in the pole vault finishing second with a personal best vault of 4.02m/13’2 1/4″.

“This was a great opportunity for us to compete at one of the best facilities in the world and the University of Michigan proved to be outstanding hosts for the first ever Power Five Invitational,” said Cowper.

The Cardinals will be back in action on February 9-10 at Indiana University.
