On Tuesday, the U.S. Basketball Writers Association announced that University of Louisville women’s basketball senior guard Dana Evans has been named the Ann Meyers Drysdale Women’s National Player of the Week.
Evans, a 5-6 senior guard from Gary, Ind., averaged 23.0 points per game, and also earned Atlantic Coast Conference player of the week honors for protecting unbeaten Louisville’s first-ever No. 1 ranking achieved the previous week. She scored 21 points and dished out seven assists in a 67-54 home victory over then-No. 23 Syracuse and then collected 10 of her 25 points in a fourth quarter rally, including an old-fashioned 3-point play for the game winner with eight seconds left to avoid being upset at unranked Wake Forest.
Louisville hosts the first of three straight games at home today against Miami at 4 p.m. ET. They host North Carolina on Thursday at 8 p.m. ET and NC State on Monday, Feb. 1.
Since the 1987-88 season, the USBWA has named a women’s National Player of the Year. For the 2012-13 season, the national and weekly player award became named for Hall of Famer and former UCLA All-American Ann Meyers Drysdale.
At the conclusion of the regular season, the USBWA will name finalists, which is voted on by the entire membership of the USBWA.
The winner of the 2021 Ann Meyers Drysdale National Player of the Year will be announced and presented at the USBWA’s annual awards event on site at the 2021 NCAA Women’s Final Four.
The U.S. Basketball Writers Association was formed in 1956 at the urging of then-NCAA Executive Director Walter Byers. With some 900 members worldwide, it is one of the most influential organizations in college basketball. It has selected a women’s All-America team since the 1996-97 season.
