
Eastern Kentucky University’s volleyball team lost to Bellarmine University, 3-1, on Sunday in Louisville.
The Knights won by scores of 13-25, 25-16, 25-20 and 25-17.
Carson Ledford and Sarah Mitchell had eight kills each for EKU (12-11, 3-6 ASUN). Ledford made just wo errors, hit .429 and had five blocks. Molly Michalak had seven kills and 19 digs.
Bailey Venard led all players with 20 kills for Bellarmine (9-12, 3-6 ASUN).
With the first set tied 6-6, Maddy Campbell began a 4-0 run with a kill. Back-to-back errors by the Knights put Eastern Kentucky on top 10-6. Mitchell’s kill made it 17-9 in favor of the Colonels. Campbell’s ace stretched the margin to double figures, 23-13. Two consecutive attack errors by Bellarmine ended the set, 25-13.
The Knights scored the first two points of the second set and never trailed. Emily Arnold made it 10-5 with an ace. Jayme Scott’s kill ended the set and tied the match.
With the third set tied, 16-16, Bellarmine scored three straight to grab a slight advantage. Venard’s kill made it 19-16. EKU got within one, 19-18, on a BU error, but never any closer.
Bellarmine took the lead for good in the fourth set on Kylie VanHoy’s kill that made it 4-3. A block by Ledford and Michalak kept Eastern Kentucky within one, 11-10, however the Knights scored the next three and pulled away for an eight-point win in the set.
The Colonels will host North Florida on Friday and Jacksonville on Saturday. Friday will be 80’s Night at McBrayer Arena.
