Great Crossing High School Warhawks pulled off a major upset by defeating the reigning state champion George Rogers Clark Cardinals in the King of the Bluegrass basketball tournament. Leading the charge for the Warhawks was sophomore point guard Junius Burrell, who had a standout performance and earned Central Bank Player of the Game honors.
Burrell scored a game-high 20 points in 35 minutes of play, shooting 7/19 from the field and 2/8 from beyond the arc. He also converted all 4 of his free throw attempts and grabbed 5 rebounds, showcasing his all-around contribution to the game. He dished out 2 assists as well, helping to set up scoring opportunities for his teammates.
Despite being the #7 ranked team in the state and facing off against the #1 ranked Cardinals, the Warhawks were able to come out on top thanks in large part to Burrell’s strong performance. He consistently found ways to score, whether it was through outside shooting or driving to the basket, and his ability to stretch the defense with his outside shooting opened up opportunities for his teammates.
This upset win was a major accomplishment for the Warhawks and a testament to the talent and determination of the team, led by the impressive play of Burrell. As they look to make a deep run in the tournament, the Warhawks will no doubt rely on him to continue to provide the scoring punch and all-around contributions that he displayed in this matchup. If he can keep up this level of play, the Warhawks will be a formidable opponent for any team they face in the coming games.
