The Lipscomb Bisons faced off against the Louisville Cardinals at the KFC Yum Center. The Bisons were led by senior guard Derrin Boyd, who put on a show in the nearly 32 minutes he played. Boyd scored 23 points on 8/11 shooting, including an impressive 4/5 from beyond the arc. In addition to his scoring, Boyd contributed 2 assists, 9 rebounds, and a steal in the game.
Boyd’s performance against the Cardinals was just the latest in a string of impressive performances for the senior guard. Last season, playing for Georgetown College, Boyd was named to the Mid-South Conference First Team after leading the Georgetown Tigers in scoring at 16.7 points per game. He was also ranked sixth in the conference in scoring, while also averaging 4.9 rebounds (second on the team), 3.1 assists, and 1.0 steals per game. Boyd shot an impressive 48.2% from the floor (204-423) and drained 40.3% of his three-point attempts (62-154). He was also a strong free throw shooter, making 82-of-100 at the line.
Boyd’s impressive play last season earned him recognition as the 2022 Mid-South Conference Outstanding Player of the Tournament, where he averaged 19.7 points and 5.0 assists in three games. He was also named Honorable Mention on the NAIA All-America Basketball Team after leading the Tigers to a Mid-South Tournament title and a No. 5 seed in the NAIA Tournament.
Before his college career, Boyd had a standout high school career at Caldwell County High School under head coach Daniel Kukahiko. In his four-year career with the Tigers, Boyd averaged 17.5 points, 5.8 rebounds, 1.7 assists, and 1.6 steals per game. He was a career 82% shooter from the charity stripe, making 428-of-524 free throw attempts. Boyd also racked up 186 assists, 174 steals, and made 149 three-pointers during his high school career. In his senior season, he averaged 24.0 points, 7.3 rebounds, 2.8 assists, and 1.6 steals, while making 58 three-pointers.
Boyd’s impressive scoring and all-around play have made him a key contributor for the Lipscomb Bisons this season. His 23-point performance against the Louisville Cardinals was just one example of his ability to take over a game and lead his team to victory. With his strong shooting and all-around skills, Boyd will be a player to watch as the Bisons continue their season.
