The Georgia Tech women’s basketball team faced off against the Louisville women’s basketball team in a highly anticipated matchup on Wednesday night. In the end, Louisville came out on top with a final score of 63-55.
Though the score was 16-16 at the end of the first quarter, Louisville surged in the second quarter, outscoring Georgia Tech 16-8 to take a 32-24 lead at halftime.
Georgia Tech was able to narrow the gap in the third quarter, outscoring Louisville 16-14 to bring the score to 46-40 heading into the final quarter. However, Louisville was able to hold on to their lead and ultimately came away with the victory, thanks in part to a strong 17-15 performance in the fourth quarter.
Georgia Tech finished the game with a field goal percentage of 39.2% (20-51), while Louisville finished with a field goal percentage of 44.6% (25-56). The Yellow Jackets also struggled from beyond the arc, finishing with a 3-point percentage of 41.2% (7-17) compared to Louisville’s 14.3% (1-7). Georgia Tech had a strong performance at the free throw line, finishing with an 88.9% (8-9) success rate, but it was not enough to overcome Louisville’s 80.0% (12-15) at the line.
On the boards, Louisville had a slight edge, finishing with a total of 31 rebounds (11 offensive and 20 defensive) compared to Georgia Tech’s 29 (8 offensive and 21 defensive). The game also saw three lead changes and one tie. Louisville had the largest lead of the game, finishing with a 12-point advantage at 46-34 in the third quarter. The Cardinals also led for a total of 35:52, compared to just 2:20 for Georgia Tech.
In terms of individual performances, Georgia Tech was led by Kara Dunn, who scored 17 points and grabbed 4 rebounds. Cameron Swartz and Bianca Jackson each added 10 points for the Yellow Jackets. Tonie Morgan contributed 8 points and a team-high 7 rebounds. Louisville was paced by Hailey Van Lith, who scored a game-high 24 points and added 4 assists, 1 block, and 4 rebounds. Olivia Cochran added 10 points and a team-high 6 rebounds, while Morgan Jones chipped in 8 points, 4 rebounds, 3 steals, and 1 block. Liz Dixon contributed 6 points, 1 block, and 1 steal for the Cardinals.
Despite the loss, Georgia Tech put up a valiant effort and will look to bounce back in their next game. Louisville, on the other hand, will look to build on this win and continue their strong play in the remainder of the season.
The ACC is shaping up to be a competitive conference in college basketball this season. Duke and Florida State are currently undefeated at 4-0, with Duke holding a slightly higher overall record at 14-1 compared to Florida State’s 15-2. Notre Dame is also off to a strong start with a 3-0 conference record and a 12-1 overall record.
Louisville, Virginia Tech, and Virginia are all sitting at 3-1, 3-2, and 2-2 in conference play respectively. NC State and Syracuse are also at .500 with 2-2 records, while Boston College and Clemson are both 2-2 as well. Miami and Wake Forest are both 2-2, and North Carolina is struggling with a 0-3 record in conference play. Georgia Tech and Pitt round out the bottom of the standings at 0-4.
It’s still early in the season, and there is plenty of time for teams to make moves up the standings. But for now, Duke and Florida State look like the teams to beat in the ACC.
