The University of Louisville softball team had a successful home opener on Tuesday evening, defeating Bellarmine 13-0 at Ulmer Stadium. With their fifth-straight win, the Cardinals improved to 11-4 on the season.
Cassie Grizzard made her first collegiate start in the circle for the Cardinals, scattering three hits and tying a career-high with four strikeouts while going the distance in the five-inning shutout. Paige Geraghty led the team at the plate, going 3-for-3 with a double and a triple while tying her career-high RBI total with five in the contest. Vanessa Miller also had an impressive game, going 2-for-2 with two runs.
Louisville got the offense started early, capitalizing on six hits, including Sarah Gordon’s two-run double, to score seven runs in the first inning. The Cardinals continued to dominate, with a pair of runs in the second inning, two more in the third inning, and two in the fourth inning, with Geraghty’s two-run triple capping off the scoring.
The Cardinals’ pitching and defense held strong, with Grizzard and the rest of the team shutting down Bellarmine. The Knights’ Claire Lehmkuhler took the loss after surrendering seven runs, six earned, on six hits and striking out one in 2/3 inning. Anna Greenwell, Megan Konermann, and Abbey Nesnidal each registered a hit for Bellarmine.
The Cardinals are looking forward to their upcoming Cardinal Classic, where they will take on Northern Kentucky, Northwestern, and Toledo at Ulmer Stadium. With the team’s impressive start to the season, they are poised for continued success as they face off against some of their toughest competition.
