The Rating Percentage Index (RPI) is a method used to evaluate the performance of sports teams based on their win-loss record and the strength of their schedule. It is one of several ranking systems used by the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) to determine which teams qualify for playoffs and championships.
The RPI takes into account the number of wins and losses a team has accumulated throughout the season, as well as the quality of their opponents. In other words, it’s not just about winning games, but also about who the team has played against.
For example, a team that has won more games against strong teams with good records will have a higher RPI than a team with the same number of wins, but against weaker teams. This means that the RPI helps to provide a more accurate picture of a team’s strength and potential to succeed in future competitions.
The RPI is used to rank teams in a variety of sports, including basketball, baseball, softball, hockey, soccer, lacrosse, and volleyball. It is often used by NCAA selection committees to determine which teams should be included in the playoffs, and it can also affect a team’s seeding in those playoffs.
By using the RPI to rank teams, fans, coaches, and players can get a better sense of which teams are the strongest and which may need to work harder in order to compete at a higher level. It helps to create a more objective standard for measuring team performance, which can lead to more fair and accurate outcomes in competitions.
