Kentucky men’s basketball senior forward Oscar Tshiebwe has officially declared for the 2023 NBA Draft, while retaining his collegiate eligibility. This allows him to submit the necessary paperwork to receive evaluations from the NBA and participate in the NBA Draft Combine, if invited. The Combine is set to take place from May 15-21, and the deadline for Tshiebwe to return to school is May 31.
Head coach John Calipari shared his thoughts on Tshiebwe’s decision, stating, “Oscar fulfilled one dream by being a Kentucky basketball player, but he’s ready to chase this next dream.” Calipari also praised Tshiebwe’s unique skillset and positive attitude, predicting that he will be an asset to any NBA team.
Tshiebwe has had an illustrious career at the University of Kentucky, making him one of the most decorated players in the program’s history. In 2022, he became the first unanimous National Player of the Year for the program after leading the nation in rebounding and breaking several records. He also earned consensus All-America honors in at least two seasons, becoming only the ninth player in Kentucky history to do so. This past season, Tshiebwe averaged 16.5 points and a nation-best 13.7 rebounds per game.
In a heartfelt statement, Tshiebwe expressed gratitude for his time at the University of Kentucky, thanking God, his family, Coach Calipari, and his teammates for their support. He announced his decision to declare for the NBA Draft while maintaining his college eligibility, asking for continued support from the Big Blue Nation as he pursues his professional basketball dreams.
Throughout his 66 appearances with the University of Kentucky, Tshiebwe has averaged 16.9 points and 14.4 rebounds per game. He is currently tied for second in career double-doubles (48), sixth in all-time career rebounds (952), and 48th in scoring (1,117).
The NBA Draft Combine will be held from May 15-21, while the 2023 NBA Draft is scheduled for June 22. It remains to be seen whether Tshiebwe will ultimately decide to pursue his NBA dreams or return to Kentucky for another season.
