Thomas More’s Cassie Saner Named Mid-South Conference Women’s Tennis Player of the Week

The Mid-South Conference announced their Women’s Tennis Player of the Week today, with Saints junior Cassie Saner (Independence, Ky./Simon Kenton) earning the prestigious honor for the first time in her career. Saner joins her teammate Alexis Covington (Cincinnati, Ohio/Walnut Hills) as the second Saint to be named Player of the Week this season.

Over the weekend, Saner showcased her exceptional talent by winning all four of her matches against Freed-Hardeman University and Bethel University (Tenn.), both of which resulted in victories for the Saints. She formed a formidable partnership with Kimberly Sabga (Maraval, Trinidad and Tobago/International School of Port of Spain), triumphing in No. 3 doubles with a score of 6-2 against Delfina Rodriguez-Molina and Hannah Pearce of Freed-Hardeman. Saner and Sabga continued their winning streak by defeating Marina Zotelli and Tijana Svitlica of Bethel 6-4 in the No. 3 doubles position.

Saner also dominated in singles play, where she swept Morgan Brown of the Lions with an impressive 6-0, 6-0 victory at No. 5 singles. She then went on to defeat Bethel’s Sophia Vasconcellos in a thrilling three-set battle, securing a win with scores of 3-6, 6-3, and 6-2. This season, Saner has a 4-2 record with Sabga in No. 3 doubles, and in singles play, she holds an overall record of 3-9 and a 3-5 record in the No. 5 position.

The Saints are set to wrap up the regular season this week with two matches, starting with an away game at the University of Pikeville on Thursday at 4:00 p.m. They will then return home to face off against Shawnee State University on Friday evening at 6:00 p.m. With Cassie Saner’s recent performance and the growing momentum of the team, the Saints are poised for a strong finish to the season.
