In the season final today Eastern Kentucky Colonels (5-6, 4-2 UAC) secured a 36-24 victory over the Stephen F. Austin Lumberjacks (3-8, 0-6 UAC) at Roy Kidd Stadium on Saturday afternoon. The win marked a fitting end to the senior class’s journey, including standout quarterback Parker McKinney.
McKinney, in his final regular-season game, delivered a stellar performance, throwing for 257 yards and a crucial touchdown. His resilience and toughness throughout the season earned praise from head coach Walt Wells, who referred to McKinney as one of the greatest to play FCS football. McKinney’s passing yardage now ranks 11th all-time in FCS history at 12,494 in his illustrious career.
The game unfolded with both teams showcasing determination, and the Colonels managed to secure a lead by halftime. Patrick Nations’ accurate field goals and a defensive play led by linebacker Maddox Marcellus and DL Jeremiah Bailey contributed to EKU’s 16-6 halftime lead.
The Lumberjacks fought back in the second half, tying the game at 16 apiece with a 33-yard field goal late in the third quarter. However, the Colonels responded with Braedon Sloan’s 15-yard touchdown run, reclaiming the lead at 23-16.
The fourth quarter saw McKinney connecting with Jalen Burbage for an 18-yard touchdown, extending EKU’s lead to 30-16. Despite a late surge from SFA, including an impressive 10-yard pass from Brian Maurer to Lawton Rikel, the Colonels held on for the win.
Sloan, with 150 rushing yards on 14 attempts and two touchdowns, played a crucial role in securing the victory. Jaden Smith led Colonel receivers with 75 yards on 7 catches, while McKinney’s strategic plays contributed to the offensive success.
The EKU defense showcased resilience, forcing turnovers and interceptions in the final moments to seal the victory. The Colonels finished the regular season on a high note, preventing Stephen F. Austin from winning a conference game throughout the year.
