WKU MBB Dominates Kentucky State 95-75, Improving to 3-1 on the Season

In a commanding performance on Saturday night at Diddle Arena, the WKU Hilltoppers secured a decisive 95-75 victory over Kentucky State for the second consecutive season. The win propels WKU to a 3-1 record early in the season, showcasing the team’s depth and offensive prowess.

Fifth-year senior Brandon Newman played a pivotal role, leading the Tops with a double-double of 17 points and 10 rebounds. The WKU bench made significant contributions, contributing 46 of the team’s 95 points. Freshman Teagan Moore impressed with 13 points on 5-of-9 shooting, highlighting the team’s promising young talent.

Don McHenry continued his impressive form, notching 13 points, 7 rebounds, and 6 assists while committing no turnovers. Head coach Steve Lutz praised McHenry’s evolution into a key player, emphasizing his ability to take care of the basketball and contribute across various facets of the game.

The game started with WKU taking an early lead, with Rodney Howard’s basket and a steal-and-slam from Newman setting the tone. However, Kentucky State responded with a pair of threes to briefly take a 10-7 lead.

WKU quickly regained control, embarking on a 10-0 run to establish a 17-10 lead. The Hilltoppers continued to build momentum, enjoying a 39-25 lead after a 16-0 run. McHenry played a pivotal role during this stretch, contributing seven points.

Despite KSU’s efforts to cut the deficit, WKU maintained control, entering halftime with a comfortable 57-43 lead. McHenry and Newman led the offensive charge in the first half, each contributing 11 points.

The second half saw WKU extending their lead, with McHenry connecting with Tyrone Marshall Jr. for a powerful slam. Newman’s sharpshooting, combined with contributions from Marshall and Dontaie Allen, propelled WKU to an 83-59 lead.

WKU held a 20-point advantage until the final minutes, securing a 95-75 victory. The Hilltoppers showcased their offensive depth, defensive prowess, and teamwork throughout the game.

Looking ahead, WKU will compete in the Northern Classic from November 24-26 in Quebec, Canada. The Hilltoppers are set to face Bowling Green, Canisius, and UNC Asheville in three consecutive days of exciting matchups.
