Kentucky MBB’s Wagner Wows Again, Claims SEC Weekly Honor

The future remains bright in Lexington, evidenced by freshman phenom D.J. Wagner capturing his second SEC Freshman of the Week award this season.

The Camden, New Jersey native was instrumental in 15th-ranked Kentucky’s rousing 87-83 upset of No. 9 North Carolina on Saturday. Wagner filled the stat sheet to the tune of 14 points, 6 rebounds, 5 assists and a steal while spearheading the signature non-conference victory.

His all-around excellence helped the Wildcats own the glass against the formidable Tar Heels frontcourt, with UK dominating rebounding margin 42-32. Wagner also catalyzed a smothering defensive effort, as Kentucky forced 17 UNC turnovers leading to 17 points.

On the season, the dynamic guard is posting 12.8 points and 3.9 assists nightly as one of the SEC’s rising young talents. That polished floor game could prove vital Thursday, with Wagner leading Kentucky on the road to face rival Louisville.

If Wagner continues such standout play, more Freshman of the Week plaudits figure to be in store – both this year and over the remainder of his UK career.
