The 18th-ranked Louisville women’s hoops squad will take a break from ACC action Wednesday evening to host an old in-state foe – the Morehead State Eagles.
Tipoff inside the KFC Yum! Center is set for 4 p.m. as the Cardinals look to finish off a three-game homestand strong before heading back out on the road.
Riding a five-game winning streak after Sunday’s 73-61 border battle victory over Kentucky, Louisville sits at 9-1 as it nears the midway point. Head coach Jeff Walz picked up career win No. 450 in that rivalry rout – further cementing his status as the program’s most successful bench boss ever.
Several newcomers to the Battle for the Bluegrass stepped up in big ways during the triumph over the Wildcats. Sophomore transfer Eylia Love erupted for 14 points to pace the Cards, while fellow sophomore and Mississippi State transfer Kiki Jefferson scored 11 – her fifth straight double-figure outing.
Louisville also got a boost from senior forward Olivia Cochran, who surpassed 1,000 career points during a gritty second half. Cochran joins 32 other Cardinals who have achieved that scoring feat.
While Cochran and backcourt mate Merissah Russell improved to a perfect 4-0 against UK, Walz’s fresh faces proved this new-look group is already gelling as the calendar nears 2023.
Now Louisville will aim to keep things rolling against the 4-5 Eagles, who already dropped an 85-44 result at SEC foe Alabama back in November. Morehead boasts a strong outside attack with nearly eight made 3-pointers per contest.
But if the Cards continue defending and rebounding as ruthlessly as they did versus Kentucky, they should make it six straight over their in-state visitors from Morehead State.
