WKU Baseball Gets 4-3 Victory over Middle Tennessee

WKU Baseball clinched a hard-fought 4-3 victory against Middle Tennessee, showcasing their resilience and determination on the field. The win propels the Hilltoppers to an impressive 30-14 record for the season (12-5 in CUSA), while the Blue Raiders slip to 14-28 (5-12 in CUSA).

This victory marks a significant milestone for WKU, as they achieve back-to-back seasons with at least 30 wins for the first time since 2010-11.

Junior Grant Burleson delivered a standout performance on the mound, supported by timely hits from sophomore Camden Ross, ultimately leading the Hilltoppers to a narrow one-run victory over MTSU to even the series.

Head coach Marc Rardin praised the team’s resilience in overcoming an early deficit, highlighting the pivotal contributions of Burleson and relief pitcher Mason Burns.

Ross emerged as a key offensive force for the Hilltoppers, tallying two doubles and two RBI while crossing the plate once. Junior Ethan Lizama showcased his prowess with a triple, while sophomore Dylan O’Connell made a significant impact with a home run, his first since returning from injury. Junior Blake Cavill also contributed with an RBI single.

After surrendering a couple of home runs in the first inning, senior Jacob Bimbi settled into his rhythm, keeping the Blue Raiders at bay for the next three frames and providing the WKU offense with an opportunity to rally.

Burleson’s entrance into the game proved pivotal, as he effectively shut down the MTSU offense, striking out five batters in 3.2 innings of shutout baseball while conceding only one hit.

With the game tied at 3-3 in the fifth inning and two runners in scoring position, Burleson exhibited composure and skill, escaping a precarious situation with a crucial strikeout and pop-up.

Ross ultimately broke the deadlock in the top of the ninth inning with his second RBI double of the day, securing the Hilltoppers’ first lead of the game.

Senior Mason Burns closed out the game with poise, notching his 13th save of the season, edging closer to the program’s single-season record.

WKU Baseball’s victory exemplifies their tenacity and ability to perform under pressure, setting the stage for continued success as they approach the Conference USA Outdoor Championships with confidence and determination.
