The Western Kentucky Hilltopper Track and Field Team concluded the first day of competition at the NCAA East Regional with freshman Kameron Horton representing WKU in the 100-meter dash. Horton finished with a time of 10.88 seconds, outperforming multiple competitors. Notably, Horton is the first WKU athlete to compete in the 100-meter dash at the NCAA prelims since 2018.
Horton, a native of Louisville, was the sole freshman competing for the Hilltoppers in the NCAA preliminaries. Throughout his freshman season, Horton showcased his versatility by competing in the 100-meter dash, the 110-meter hurdles, and the 200-meter dash. In his six meets, Horton achieved top-five finishes on six occasions, including two first-place finishes: one in the 100-meter dash at the Joe Walker Invitational and another in the 200-meter dash at the Hilltopper Relays.
At the Conference USA Outdoor Championships, Horton set a new personal record in the 100-meter dash, finishing in 10.25 seconds, which qualified him for the NCAA East Regional.
Looking ahead, Ajla Basic is set to compete in the women’s hammer throw on Thursday at 9 a.m. CT.
The Hilltopper Track and Field Team remains hopeful for continued success as the NCAA East Regional progresses, with athletes like Horton paving the way for future Hilltopper competitors.
