The University of Kentucky women’s golf team showcased their resilience and determination in the second round of the NCAA East Lansing Regional, putting themselves in contention for a top-five finish and a spot in the NCAA Women’s Golf Championship.
Strong Performance in Second Round
Despite challenging conditions, the Wildcats recorded an even-par 288 in the second round at Forest Akers Golf Course in East Lansing, Michigan. This impressive performance propelled them to a share of seventh place, just four shots behind the top five teams.
Individual Highlights
María Villanueva Aperribay delivered a remarkable turnaround, shaving off 10 strokes from her first round to shoot a 3-under-par 69. Her stellar performance included four birdies and just one bogey, culminating in a thrilling chip-in birdie on the final hole.
Cathryn Brown, playing in her first NCAA Regional, also made significant contributions with a 1-under-par 71. Despite challenging conditions, she showcased her resilience with three birdies on the back nine, igniting cheers from the coaching staff and her family.
Consistent Performances
Other Wildcats also contributed to the team’s success, with Marta López Echevarría and Marissa Wenzler both carding identical scores of 2-over-par 74. Laney Frye, an All-American and All-Southeastern Conference First Team selection, delivered a solid performance with a 3-over-par 75.
Looking Ahead
As they head into the final round, the Wildcats are determined to build on their momentum and secure a top-five finish. Paired with Oklahoma State and Augusta, they will tee off from No. 1 with sunny skies and favorable conditions forecasted.
