Louisville Track & Field Signee KJ Byrd Wins USATF U20 Decathlon National Championship

University of Louisville men’s track & field signee KJ Byrd captured the USATF U20 national championship in the decathlon on Thursday evening at Hayward Field. With this victory, Byrd secures a spot on the national team for the 2024 World Athletics U20 Championships, set to take place from August 27-31 in Lima, Peru.

Championship Performance

Byrd, a native of Connelly Springs, N.C., accrued a total of 7,536 points to clinch the national title. Competing against 12 other athletes, Byrd finished in the top five in seven out of the ten events. His standout performances included leading the field in four events:

  • 110m Hurdles: Clocked a time of 14.16 seconds.
  • High Jump: Cleared a height of 2.02m (6-7.5).
  • Long Jump: Achieved a mark of 7.16m (23-6).
  • Pole Vault: Cleared a final bar of 5.20m (17-0.75).

Senior Season Highlights

Byrd’s success at the USATF U20 Championships follows an impressive senior season. Competing for East Burke High School, he won the pentathlon at the 2024 adidas Track Nationals. Additionally, he captured three North Carolina 2A state titles:

  • Indoor High Jump
  • Outdoor 110m Hurdles
  • Outdoor Long Jump
