Eastern Kentucky University freshman guard Asante Gist has been voted the Ohio Valley Conference Co-Freshman of the Week for men’s basketball, the league office announced on Monday.
It is the fifth time this season Gist has earned the conference’s Freshman of the Week honors. No other freshman has earned it more than twice.
Gist averaged 21.0 points and 4.0 assists-per-game last week for the Colonels.
The point guard from East Orange, New Jersey poured in a career-high 26 points at OVC West leader Murray State on Thursday night. He scored eight of those 26 points in the final minute of the game, nearly rallying the Colonels to a come-from-behind win. He also dished out a team-best five assists versus the Racers.
On Saturday, Gist paced EKU with 16 points and three assists at in-state rival Morehead State.
Gist now ranks 11th in the OVC in scoring (14.8 points-per-game) and ninth in assists (3.8 assists-per-game). He leads all freshmen in the league in both categories.
Gist shared this week’s honor with Southeast Missouri guard Denzel Mahoney.
The Colonels return to action this Thursday, January 26, at Jacksonville State. Tipoff is scheduled for 8:00 p.m.
